Contamination
Captain Nova
“Ash,” the distinctly male voice of the Colonel awakened me.
The clock at my bedside read 0300. His deep brown eyes were troubled. I glanced at his hand, lightly touching my shoulder and said, “Why are you in my quarters Colonel?”
“He spoke quickly and softly, “We are under attack by some sort of guerrilla unit. They are heavily armed and their target appears to be the Dragoon prototype. They breached the perimeter about 5 minutes ago and their cutting a bloody path right to your lab.
His words were punctuated with the sound of automatic weapons and the concussions of grenades. I swore and jumped from my bed running for my dresser. All thoughts of the Colonel disappeared as I stripped down and donned my fatigues and grabbed my trusty Glock. A cough startled me and I spun with my sidearm at the ready.
The Colonel was staring, quite pointedly, at the wall with his back facing me. I sighed and said, “Let's go.”
A rumble was felt as the lights flickered and gave out. The glow of the tritium sights on my Glock was all that lit the pitch black room. I flipped the under-barrel flashlight on and saw the Colonel do the same. I realized, a second too late, that without power the doors were locked.
“Laugh and your dead,” I said.
He wisely kept his mouth shut as he stepped past me. But, I thought I saw a hint of a smile as he palmed a section of wall and a hidden panel slid open. He pulled a lever and as the panel slid shut, the door hissed open.
“How did you ...” I started to ask.
“I helped design the base, these were one of my contributions,” He said.
“What other contributions did you make?” I asked.
“I'd love to tell you but, is now really the time. How about a raincheck.” he replied as he took point.
“Sure,” I said. Sometimes I forgot things, like being under attack by guerrilla's. Mostly it just seemed to happen when the Colonel was nearby. Those lovely brown eyes… Not now Ash, focus, focus. I thought. He was still moving down the corridor and I hurried to catch up. As we moved deeper into the base, I watched our six. We were approaching the Security barracks and dead SEALS were everywhere.
“Have we managed to kill any of these guerrilla's?” I whispered.
“Not yet, but I'm sure gonna crack some heads before this is over. They had inside help to get this far, I'm certain of it.” He whispered back angrily.
